What is the PausePad Method and Why It Matters

At Max & Me, we believe emotional resilience is the foundation for navigating life with confidence, kindness, and creativity. It also plays a vital role in addressing some of the biggest challenges children face today, including bullying, emotional outbursts, low self-esteem, and the constant pressure to always get things right. That is why we created a simple and practical tool called the PausePad Method.

So, what is the PausePad Method?

It is a playful and effective way to help children (and adults too) pause, process, and work through big emotions in a healthy, manageable way.

We all know how overwhelming feelings can be, especially for children who are still learning how to name and understand them. Anger, stress, sadness, or frustration can lead to outbursts, shutdowns, or unhealthy habits. If children are not taught how to deal with emotions early on, they may carry those struggles into adulthood.

The PausePad Method offers a calm, creative, and gentle way to pause, feel, and move forward.

Here’s how it works:

Time It
Children are guided to give emotions a time limit. This does not mean ignoring the feeling. It means recognising that emotions are real, but they do not have to take over. For example, anger might feel huge in the moment, but staying angry for days or reacting in harmful ways is not helpful. Learning to time emotions shows children that all feelings are valid, but they do not have to last forever.

Name It
With the help of tools like our Max & Me emotion poster, children can point to or say what they are feeling. This helps build emotional vocabulary and teaches that feelings are not scary or wrong. Naming a feeling is often the first step to understanding and managing it.

Feel It
Children are encouraged to pause, take a few breaths, and feel the emotion without trying to push it away. Through our stories and activities, we help children notice where they feel emotions in their bodies and how to stay present without becoming overwhelmed.

Move It
This step helps release the energy of the emotion through action. Children might move, jump, draw, trace, colour, or even punch a pillow. Movement, play, and creative expression allow the emotion to shift and help children regain a sense of calm and control.

Calm It
Finally, children are supported in calming themselves. This might mean taking another breath, hugging a pillow, finishing a drawing, or simply deciding they have done what they can for now. Even if the feeling lingers, they have gently moved through it. From here, they can carry on with their day, knowing they have the tools to cope.

Why is this important?

Because emotional resilience is not just about handling feelings. It helps children grow into confident leaders, caring friends, and thoughtful problem-solvers. It supports healthy relationships, reduces bullying, and encourages children to engage with the world in sustainable and creative ways.

The PausePad Method is simple, practical, and rooted in everyday life. It’s not about being perfect. It’s about learning to pause, process, and take the next healthy step.

We believe every child can benefit from a PausePad moment.

Let’s build a generation of emotionally resilient children, one pause at a time.

Tail wags,
Adrie
